UniMAP is distributed all over Perlis. It has three main campuses, the Puah Putra Main Campus, the City Campus, and the Green Campus. The campuses are quite some distance apart. However, one can easily travel from a campus to the other using UniMAP bus service, which is free of charge to students. Hence, you need not worry about getting your own transport.
Kangar is where most of the facilities such as shopping, bus terminal, eateries, etc. are located.
UniMAP is blessed to have been set up in Perlis. The smallest state in Malaysia, Perlis is located at the northern part of the west coast of peninsula Malaysia, with Satun and Songkhla Province (Thailand) on its northern border, and Malaysia’s Kedah at the south. The population of this tiny state is about 230 000, comprising mainly of Malays (the majority), Chinese, Indians, and those of Thai descend.
Kangar is the capital of Perlis, and Arau is its royal capital. Padang Besar, which is one of Malaysia’s gateways to Thailand, is about 30 minutes’ drive from Kangar. The main ferry terminal here is at the small village of Kuala Perlis, linking mostly to the beautiful and famous island of Langkawi. Students and staff alike are known to spend countless weekends there – relaxing on the beach or shopping amidst the hustle and bustle of the island’s many charming little shops.
Another good place for Kangarians to visit from time to time is Penang – an attractive island about 2.5 hours’ drive away. Like Langkawi, there are beaches and shops there, making it one of the favorite destinations of many. Metropolitan Kuala Lumpur lies about six hours away by car, or about 40-50 minutes by air from Alor Star. There is no airport in Perlis (it is said that an attempt to build an airport here would end up having part of the runway in Thailand, due to the small size of the state!). So if you want to travel by air, you need to go through Alor Star, which is about 40 minutes by car from Kangar.
Unlike Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and other big towns, Kangar, in fact the whole of Perlis, is extremely quiet – hence making it an ideal location for study. By coming here, you will be surrounded by rustic charm, peaceful greenery, and serene foliage. You will see paddy fields almost everywhere, changing colors and hues as the crop goes through its cycle of growth. Known to be the place to escape from the commotion of city life, Perlis offers a perfect environment for the one thing very much needed in order to succeed in the academia – FOCUS.
