"Semangat UniMAP" should be inculcated in New Student - Vice Chancellor

Arau, Sept 3  - The new students registered for the 2015/2016 academic session of study at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) should inculcate the spirit of love towards UniMAP not only during the duration of study but until they are titled as the Alumni.

UniMAP Vice-Chancellor said, new students should feel proud to belong to the category of 49.6 percent of students who have a place in public universities (UA) of the 100.536 students who applied for admission to the UA.

The students, he said, should always hold on to university’s motto that is "Knowledge, Sincerity and Excellence" in facing the nature of campus life.

"Cultivate gratitude in your own self as a chosen people who received offers of the first session admission and cultivate a spirit of love towards your university since you are now part of UniMAP’s  extended family,” he said.

He mentioned it during the keynote speech at the The Welcoming Ceremony  of Students and new students oath taking at Dewan Ilmu, Kampus UniMAP Pauh Putra here recently.

The oath reading was led by a student from School of Materials Engineering, Muaz Fakhruddin Muzaffar.

During last 1 September intake, UniMAP has offered 3,129 places and the number of students who registered is 2,548 hence it is over 80 percent attendance to enrol in 37 programs offered in UniMAP.

From that amount, 1,437 were girls while the remaining 1,111 were boys.

Furthermore, according to Dr. Kamarudin, as to date UniMAP has produced more than 12,000 graduates, of which over 90 percent managed to get jobs, continue their studies or running their own businesses.

More to be proud of, he said, over 200 alumni currently serving in UniMAP in various academic and non-academic positions.

He explained, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd. Faizal Jamlus was among the first batch of UniMAP who faced multiple challenges at that time when UniMAP have not yet owned a permanent campus and  learning facilities as perfect as it is now.

"However, he proved with determination, he was not only managed to get a degree but to continue his studies at doctorate level and is now a Professor at the School of Computer and Communication Engineering at UniMAP and possessed a professional engineers certification at the age of 34 years old," he added.

Dr. Kamarudin said, at the age of 14 years of establishment, UniMAP now has grown rapidly and created numerous achievements both local and abroad including improved its position in the ranking of 226 best in Asia compared to 242 positions in the last year.

He said the university's excellence depends on the ability of university lecturers in uplifting university’s name through more participations as a visiting professor, presenting paper, research and all of these will improve the level of excellence of the university.

"The task to uplift the university’s name has to be done in team. Therefore, I,  as the vice-chancellor will continue to work together with the lecturers and instructors as a team to be responsible not only for students and lecturers but also involve the parents," he explained.
