Former UniMAP VC Titled Outstanding Scientist At Euroinvent 2016

Iași, 21 May – Former University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Vice Chancellor Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin continued to be recognised and appreciated for his numerous contributions when he was conferred upon the Outstanding Scientist award during the 8th European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation (EUROINVENT 2016) at the Palas Mall here yesterday.

Dr. Kamarudin who is also the President of the Malaysian Researchers and Innovators Society (MyRIS) was bestowed the award for his contributions in the development of advanced materials between Malaysia and Romania.

Since 2010, over 100 academic publications such as high-impact journals, books and proceedings and others were printed as a result of these bilateral relations.

Besides that, the Malaysian team performed proudly at EUROINVENT 2016 as their research products received numerous accolades from various agencies and procured nine gold and four silver medals.

According to Dr. Kamarudin, one of UniMAP's research products GeoPipe invented by Centre for Excellence Geopolymer and Green Technology doctorate student Mohamad Firdaus Abu Hashim won the special award from the Croatian Inventors Association, and Best Invention from the Association of Thai Innovation and Invention Promotion (ATIP) Thailand to go with its gold medal.

“Another UniMAP gold victory came from Prof. Madya Dr. Zainab Hamzah's research A Portable and Handy Edible Bird Nest Instant Drink, which also earned a special award from the University of Sibiu, Romania.

“Seven other gold medals for Malaysia were secured by Prof. Dr. Hanafi Ismail (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Prof. Ir. Dr. Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin (Universiti Teknologi Petronas), Dr. Ervina Efzan Mohd Nor (Multimedia University), Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Kuala Terengganu, MRSM Betong Sarawak and Sekolah Tinggi Kluang Johor along with two gold medals won by private corporation FX Group Sdn. Bhd. who also participated in EUROINVENT,” he said in a statement here.

Previously, MyRIS participated in a bilateral cooperation with Eurobusiness Haller from Poland and the Association of Thai Innovation and Invention Promotion (ATIP) Thailand attended by MyRIS' president Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin. Meanwhile, Agnieszka Jastrzębska and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Unchalee Sa represented Eurobusiness-Haller and ATIP respectively.

The International Conference on Innovative Materials (ICIR 2016) was also held at the Hotel Ramada Iași Romania which involves 100 working papers from 17 countries where quality works would be published in high-impact journal Scopus, with two primary Malaysian speakers namely Dr. Norsuria Mahmed (UniMAP) and Prof. Ir. Dr. Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin (UTP) and jointly organised by UniMAP and the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași.

Over 500 inventions from 40 countries competed in EUROINVENT 2016 this year; among them Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Korea, Taiwan, Moldova, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Russia, Poland, Vietnam, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The EUROINVENT 2016 launch was officiated by Iasi Mayor Mihai Chirica.

Meanwhile, UniMAP Vice Chancellor Dato' Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said that UniMAP's proud achievements indicated UniMAP's excellent and active international networking.

“I am grateful for this rewarding achievement which has a stimulating impact on UniMAP and hope UniMAP will continue to remain excellent in the future,” he said when contacted.

This was UniMAP's first international achievement since Dr. Zul Azhar was officially appointed Vice Chancellor on 1 May.
