UniMAP Takes Steps To Be Independent, Generates Own Income

ARAU, 6 June (Bernama) – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has taken proactive steps to its own generate its own economic growth employing its mental and intellectual assets.

UniMAP's new Vice Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said that this measure would turn the university into a profit centre and not a cost centre as regarded by some parties.

He said UniMAP and other public universities (UA) could no longer depend on government aid and should utilise their available assets to generate income to support its operational costs.

“In this regards, UniMAP is presently doubling its efforts in the fields of entrepreneurship and consultancy, as well as increasing collaborations with the public sector in research and product commercialisation,” he said after receiving the Vice Chancellor Assignment Note from the former Vice Chancellor Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Kamarudin Hussin at the UniMAP Dewan Kecemerlangan here today.

The Raja Muda Perlis, also the UniMAP Chancellor, graced the event with his presence.

Zul Azhar said UniMAP continued to attract higher number of international students to continue their studies here to generate revenue for the university and to spread its wings to the international arena.

He declared that in 2014 and 2015, the number of UniMAP's foreign student intakes were 136 and 147 respectively.

The September and October intakes saw a higher number of international students signing up with UniMAP's learning programmes, he said.

According to Zul Azhar, UniMAP is also raising awareness among its employees and students on the need to conserve electricity for the green technology programme on campus to succeed.

The Pauh Putra campus electricity bill was RM1 million a month excluding maintenance costs. This smart usage of electricity would be able to save as much as RM20,000 per day, he revealed.

Zul Azhar was appointed the UniMAP Vice Chancellor beginning 1 May until 20 April 2019.After 14 years of operating, UniMAP is currently positioned at seventh place within the country and 750th place among 40,000 universities worldwide.
