UniMAP Saves RM10 Million in Point To Point Wireless Bridge Project
Kangar – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is expected to save up to RM 10 million within the next three years because of a strategic collaboration with Strategic Alliance Sdn. Bhd (SASB) to increase its broadband capacity through point to point wireless bridges.
UniMAP Vice Chancellor Dato’ Prof. Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said that the collaboration affords the UniMAP community to enjoy higher speeds of broadband access, up to 200 Mbps compared to 8 Mbps previously.
He said that UniMAP which operates as a Public University (UA) with a distributed campus was previously connected to the internet via a leased line to the national communication service provider.
To be in line with UniMAP's intent to evolve into a superior university, broadband facilities and computer network architecture for the UniMAP community must be upgraded.
“Yet with financial constraints, UniMAP must take a two-pronged initiative to increase the broadband network capacity and also save cost.
“After seeing the results of the first phase of the point to point wireless bridge technology that links the ICT Centre at Kubang Gajah with the Centre for Excellence Advanced Sensor Technology (CEASTech) at Taman Muhibbah, School of Environmental Engineering and School of Bioprocess Engineering, Jejawi, broadband capacity has been increased to 200 Mbps at the same cost,” he said in a statement here today.
Dr. Zul Azhar said this after inspecting the point to point wireless bridge installed at the KWSP Building here to increase bandwidth capacity for the UniMAP community outside of Kangar for phase two via 800 Mbps-capacity antennae.
Also present was Director of UniMAP ICT Centre Nashrudin Mohd. Shukor, UniMAP Registrar Zuber Haji Mohamad, Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering Prof. Ir. Dr. R. Badlishah Ahmad, Dean of PPIPT Associate Prof Dr. Hazry Desa and SASB Managing Director Khairul Nizam Saud.
According to Dr. Zul Azhar, phase two began last June and has been successfully installed from the ICT Centre at Kubang Gajah to the KWSP Building in Kangar, the KWSP Building to the School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship (PPIPT) Pengkalan Jaya, PPIPT Building to the Institute of Nano Electronic Engineering (INEE) Seriab, and the INEE Building to the Wang Ulu Residential College.
In addition, he said that the phase two installations also established a 450 Mbps link antenna from the KWSP Building to the Bursary Department in Kangar.
“In short, the project is helping UniMAP to convert a leased line-based network between UniMAP buildings in Kangar and Jejawi with a bandwidth of 38 Mbps to a new infrastructure with an increased total bandwidth capacity of 3,650 Mbps.
“This service will be expanded to other areas including the UniMAP permanent campus in the future,” he stated.
