UniMAP Student Chosen For Ship For Southeast Asian And Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) 2016
Kangar, 6 Sept – A second year Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering student became among 28 participants nationwide chosen to attend the 43rd Ship for South East Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) 2016.
Peshminder Pall Singh, 19, will be attending the programme which is organised by the Japanese Government Cabinet with the collaboration of the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) for 53 days from 25 October to 15 December.
According to Peshminder, he applied for the programme via the KBS last February and attended a psychological examination and the Selection Camp which took place for three days to assess 121 youths nationwide.
He said he did not expect to be chosen for the programme when it was announced in June recently seeing as the tests he had undergone were difficult.
“Along with 28 other participants from around the country, I will be attending the Japan-ASEAN Youth Leader Summit in Japan on 1 November before sailing to Vietnam on 4 November aboard the Nippon Maru.
“We will stay in Vietnam for four days and then in Thailand for another four days, followed by Singapore and Indonesia during the entire voyage before returning to Japan,” he said.
Peshminder who hails from Selangor also said that his family expressed worry on the long duration of the programme which might disrupt his diploma studies at UniMAP.
“I convinced my family that I am able to attend this programme without neglecting my studies seeing that this opportunity is not easily obtained because of the series of difficult tests.
“In fact I hope that my participation will help inspire my friends to attend programmes such as this not just for acquiring new experiences, but also to uphold the UniMAP name in the international arena,” he stated.
SSEAYP is a programme for the youths of South East Asia which began in 1974 as a mutual agreement between Japan and five South East Asian nations namely Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
330 Japanese youths and 10 South East Asian countries will be participating in the programme.
