Two Schools To Bring The Perlis Challenge To The Innovation Competition In Korea
Kangar, July 21 - Two schools, the Putra National Primary School and Al Madrasah Al Alawiyah Ad Diniah (Al-Maad) Religious Secondary School to bring the Perlis challenge to the sixth edition of the World Invention Creativity Contest (WICC) which will take place from 28th to 30th of July in Seoul, Korea.
The Putra National Primary School received a total sponsorship of RM10,000 from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) following the success of a young researcher who won the Perlis Engineering Research & Learning Innovation Symposium (PERLIS) 3.0 competition through “Solar Cat Feeder” product which was held last May in collaboration with Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation.
Al-Maad School received sponsorship from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Center of Excellence Geopolymer & Green Technology (CEGeoGTech) of UniMAP and Malaysia's Research and Innovation Society (MyRIS) and will be presented by six students and four escort teachers.
UniMAP Vice-Chancellor, Dato' Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said UniMAP has always organized various programs and special research and innovation activities among school students to enhance students' interest in the field related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
He said that it was also indirectly a social service of the university, especially to support the target of 60:40 Policy to be implemented to increase the number of science stream students by 60 percent compared to 40 percent of arts stream students.
"According to the 2014 statistics, there are about 46 percent of students who chose STEM streams nationwide and, if seen at the Perlis state level, the amount of STEM streams are still far behind at about 25 percent.
"Hence, through this kind of activity, UniMAP hopes that it will nourish the student's interest in learning STEM's knowledge. Students are given the guidance to materialize their respective research ideas by the educators from all the Engineering Schools in UniMAP, "he added.
He said that after the Donation Handover Ceremony and UniMAP Vice-Chancellor Office’s Aidilfitri Celebration at the KWSP Building, today. At the event, all the students and teachers received gifts and consolations for their expenses in Korea.
Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) of UniMAP, Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd. Fo'ad Sakdan and UniMAP Registrar, Zuber Haji Mohamad.
The WICC organized by the Korea University Invention Association (KUIA) is a special research platform that brings together student innovation from schools around the world.
The competition will serve as an interactive educational medium in creating opportunities for students to acquire inventive inspiration and innovative through interaction among participants.
