Nine Schools Represent Perlis in NRC 2018
ARAU, 14 August – Nine teams will represent Perlis in the upcoming National Robotic Competition (NRC) 2018 after winning the Perlis state-level NRC held at Dewan Serbaguna Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) recently.
41 teams from eight primary schools and ten secondary schools around Perlis took part in the 11 categories contested.
Dean of UniMAP’s Mechatronic Engineering School (PPK), Prof. Madya Ir. Ts. Dr. Abu Hassan Abdullah said that the Perlis state-level NRC was UniMAP’s sophomore effort in organising the event.
“We are moved by the trust given by the Perlis Department of Education (JPN) and SASBADI Holdings Berhad to UniMAP's Mechatronics Engineering School this year to host this competition for a second.
“The competition was held to select teams which will represent Perlis at the national level to be held in September and then at the international level in Chiang Mai, Thailand later this November,” he said.
The prize giving ceremony was graced by the Perlis JPN Head of the Humanitarian and Development Sector Sharudin Mahhmud and SASBADI Learning Solutions Sdn. Bhd Technical Support Manager Kendrick Lee.
The winners of the 11 categories were Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Hwa Aik, Arau (Regular Pro Category – Primary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Syed Alwi, Kangar (Regular Pro Category – Lower Secondary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Perlis, Kuala Perlis (Regular Pro Category – Upper Secondary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Mata Ayer, Mata Ayer (Open Category – Lower Secondary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putra, Jayapura (Open Category – Upper Secondary School), Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Chinese) Hwa Aik, Arau (NRC Football Category), Sekolah Agama Al-Islahiyah (Primary), Simpang Empat (Regular Rookie Category – Primary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato 'Ali Ahmad, Kangar (Regular Rookie Category – Lower Secondary School), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Besar Utara, Padang Besar (Regular Rookie Category – Upper Secondary School) and Mata Ayer National High School, Mata Ayer (STEM Design and Innovation Category).
Winners took home trophies, medals and certificates.
Dr. Abu Hassan explained that PPK Mechatronic was actively organising robotic workshops using Lego MINDSTORMS to primary and secondary schools around Perlis and northern Kedah.
“Organising such programmes is a part of University Social Responsibility (USR) for the benefit of society as a whole. Creativity and innovation can not be taught but it can be indirectly implied through planned and instructional activities.
“I believe that organising such programmes is the best platform in providing and disseminating accurate and up-to-date information to school and teachers,” he said.
