UniMAP Protects The Environment Through Co-Curricular Course

Kangar, 10 March – In providing the exposure and appreciation of several aspects of soft skills such as loving nature, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is offering the Human and Nature Sustainability Co-Curricular Course to students.

This is the first course of its kind to be offered at UniMAP under the coordination of the Sustainable Campus Coordinator Dr Siti Khadijah Zaaba and participated by 40 registered students.

The course briefing was delivered by Dr Siti Khadijah and initiated by Ts Dr Irnis Azura Zakarya who delivered a lecture on composting, including the techniques used to make compost from waste food.

According to Dr Siti Khadijah, besides the briefing, the students were also taught how to make compost by using the Simple Compost System (SKM) located near the Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra (PTSFP) library.

“Interestingly, seven senior lecturers from various UniMAP schools volunteered to help run the co-curricular activities.

“The students are divided into seven groups to carry out projects planned by each of the seven senior lecturers,” she said.

The senior lecturers involved for the respective activities were Dr Umi Fazara Md Ali, Dr Shuhaida Yahud, Dr Norshah Aizat Shuaib, Dr Ragunathan Santiagoo, Dr Sara Tasina Yusof, Dr Irnis Azura and Dr Siti Khadijah herself.

Dr Siti Khadijah said that in addition to composting, the other activities were tree planting, plogging, recycling, hydroponics, aquaponics and carbon footprint.

“Besides nature appreciation soft skills, these activities can expose the students to leadership, cooperation, discipline and channelling structured action.

“This course also increases the platform of cooperation between local and international universities through co-curricular activity,” she said.
