Pi Memerisation - Three Perlis Schools in World Top 10
ARAU, 6 May – Three secondary school students from the state will be listed among the top 10 in the world for the memorisation of Square-Root 2 ( √²) after successfully memorising pi to the longest decimal places during the recent Pi Memorisation Competition Perlis 2019.
Student Ija Husna Ruslan from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Syed Sirajuddin was anointed the winner in the Square-Root 2 ( √²) category, earning herself the fifth place in the world upon memorising 2,502 digits.
Second place went to Nurzal Effiyana Mohd Rahidi from Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra (SMSTSP) who memorised 1,040 digits while a student from SMK Perlis, Vincent Chong Qi Zhi, attained third spot for memorising 898 digits.
They each took home a cash prize of RM 300.00, RM 200.00 and RM 100.00 respectively and a trophy, a hamper and a certificate of participation.
According to Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and International Affairs Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Rezuwan Haji Kamaruddin, the competition second series attracted 743 participants from 38 schools in Perlis to join the competition which was open to all primary and secondary schools in the state.
“This shows a very encouraging increase compared to the inaugural event last year where only 361 participants from 19 secondary schools in Perlis had signed up,” he said in his welcome speech at the competition's award-giving ceremony.
He added that memorising the value of pi might be foreign to the people of Perlis and Malaysia in general because of society's preconceptions toward the concept.
“However, the result of this is that there are now 328 Malaysians listed in the Pi World Ranking List with 323 of them being Perlis schoolchildren.
“In fact, SMK Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen student Seah Jin Hong scored the highest points at the 2018 programme by memorising 753 digits in pi in 10 minutes.
Besides the Square-Root 2 (√² ) category, three other categories contested were the Pi Memorisation Competition, the Exponent-e Memorization Competition and the 100 digits Pi Challenge.
The Pi Memorisation Competition was won by Auni Humayraa Aswazir from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Oran who memorised 543 digits which earned her a place in the Malaysian Pi Records for under 12 years old.
Fourth former Teoh Kar Keat, a SMK Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen student, won the Exponent-e Memorisation Competition by recalling 1002 pi digits which earned him 13th spot in the Exponent-World Ranking List.
In the 100 digits Pi Challenge, Chuah Bee Tian from Sekolah Menengah Derma answered questions up to Level 6 and 7. Gracing the event was HRH Raja Muda Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail who is also UniMAP Chancellor. Also present was HRH Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, UniMAP Pro Chancellor.
