UniMAP Grants Freedom of Speech to Students
PAUH PUTRA, 26th May – University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has granted the freedom of speech to its students in expressing their opinion or advise to improve the university’s system.
UniMAP Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. R Badlishah Ahmad said it would be a good opportunity for the university’s management to be able to listen to the problems and opinions directly from the students as well as improving student-management relations.
“We support the aspirations and efforts in the formulation of the new Higher Education Act to replace the AUKU by 2020 that would provide the students the freedom to speak.
“I believe it will bring along more challenges for the university's student leadership thus creating more students with the potential to become the country’s future leaders,” he said when delivering a speech at the Vice Chancellor’s Iftar Ceremony with the UniMAP Leadership at Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Residential College at UniMAP.
Also present were UniMAP Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni Prof. Dr. Mohd Foad Sakdan and Dean of Department of Student Affairs and Alumni Associate Prof. Dr. Muzammil Jusoh.
Badlishah remarked that UniMAP currently has approximately 15,000 students.
“I believe this is a difficult number to manage by only the Vice Chancellor, Assistant Vice Chancellors and Deans.
“However 30 Students Council (MPP) members and 80 Residential College Residents Council (MPKK) leaders will have to become a medium between the university’s management and the students,” he added.
Meanwhile UniMAP Students Council President Muhammad Amir Harith Abdul Jalil said that UniMAP student leaders will fully support the Vice Chancellor and be ready to cooperate in helping the university.
“We hope that this student empowerment as voiced by the Minister of Education Dr. Maszlee Malik will be welcomed by the university so that students’ voices can be heard by the top management for the benefit of all,” he said.
