Raja Muda Perlis: Athletes need to put 100 percent interest in sports

PAUH PUTRA, October 12 - Raja Muda Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail cum-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) called for all athletes to strive and put a 100 percent interest in sports.

 "An athlete must have 'pride' or 'dignity' that need to be defended in sports because you are the hope and reliance of the nation, state, university or team represented.

"This responsibility is very big and you have to fight tooth and nail to win or defend a victory," he said when officiating the 11th UniMAP Close Athletics Championships  Closing Ceremony, and 2015 4th UniMAP, here today.

Also gracing the ceremony, his consort Raja Puan Muda Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil cum UniMAP Pro Chancellor.

Also present were the Chief Minister of Perlis, Datuk Seri Azlan Man, UniMAP Vice-Chancellor, Brig Jen Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Kamarudin Hussin and Secretary of Sports Division, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Hazally Jalil.

The crown prince said, sport generally contribute to a range of benefits including help improve a person's self confidence when constantly be exposed to a variety of games and tournaments.

"Sports may also build positive character as a disciplined athlete, brave, strong, mutual assistance, teamwork and friendship.

"Through sports activities, it also help reduce stress and depression as a result of the burden of one's life because it increases blood flow to the brain, secretes hormones, stimulates the nervous system and increase the level of morphine that gives positive impact on people's feelings," he said.

He also stressed that sport should be a continuous or consistent and not only an 'ad hoc' when there is a competition to ensure a high impact output.

"This is because, skills need to be constantly polished with ongoing training in order to strengthen and familiarize with the real tournament situations.

"Success does not come easy with " half-hearted" effort, in contrast, it requires a commitment and hard work by all parties

"Always be prepared to face various tournaments at any time and to establish mutual understanding between team members, thus improving the quality and dignity of the country's sports in the international arena," he said again.

The 2015 11th UniMAP Close Athletics Championships, and 4th UniMAP Open which took place from last October 9 to 11 paticipated by more than 5000 students of a close category.

In addition, it has also caught the interest of the national level athletes to participate in the open category and 19 teams in the country and two from abroad.
