Five Tournament Records Broken At The UniMAP Closed Athletics Championship
Arau, 12 October – The 11th Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Closed Athletics Championship came to a close last night after seeing five tournament records broken by athletes from 10 participating Schools.
Four of the records broken were in the men's events however Fabiatuladawiyah Mohd. Zaimi from the School of Electrical System Engineering (PPKSE) was the sole woman to score a gold medal for the shot put and break the tournament record with her throwing distance of 7.98 metres.
This achievement as well as also winning gold in the discus throw accorded Fabiatuladawiyah the championship sportswoman title, while the UniMAP Sprint King Muhammad Zulhilmi Johari from the Faculty of Engineering Technology (FTK) was crowned the championship sportsman.
Muhammad Zulhilmi scored one gold each in the 100 and 200 metres as well as creating a new championship record for the 200 metres. He also assisted the FTK team in scoring gold for the 4x100 which also acquired a new championship record of 46.57s.
Another new championship record was recorded by PPKSE student Mad Yusof Madusah in the triple jump event with a distance of 12.79 metres, overcoming the previous record of 11.46 metres.
The victory won by the PPKSE athletes allowed their contingent, led by their Dean Dr. Haziah Abdul Hamid, to be overall champion of the 11th UniMAP Closed Athletics Championship by reaping 11 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.
Second place went to the School of Business Innovation & Technopreneurship (PPIPT) who scored five gold, four silver and five bronze medals, while FTK was ranked at third place with four gold, three silver and four bronze.
UniMAP Vice Chancellor Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin said that this tournament has brought out new talents among the freshmen students to take up the challenge for UniMAP at the upcoming Higher Education Sports Institute Championship (SUKIPT) 2016.
“The undergraduate sportswomen, for example, are among the new talents identified through this championship. UniMAP by way of the Sports Centre will continue to monitor the athletes' performances to increase their achievements in student championships.
“The number of student participation increased from 4309 students in last year's championship to 5771 students this year,” he said.
The three-day event that began on 9 October was participated by 11 UniMAP Schools. Besides PPKSE, PPIPT and FTK, other contingents hailed from the School of Material Engineering, School of Bioprocess Engineering, School of Manufacturing Engineering, School of Mechatronic Engineering, School of Microelectronic Engineering, School of Computer and Communication Engineering, School of Environmental Engineering and School of Human Development and Techno-Communication (iKOM).
The closing ceremony was officiated by the Raja Muda Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail. Also gracing the event with her presence was Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Also in attendance were the Chief Minister of Perlis Datuk Seri Azlan Man and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) Sports Division Secretary Hazally Jali.
