UniMAP is  sharing its Solar Technology Expertise with Three Boarding Schools

Kangar, October 26 - Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) will share its expertise in solar technology with three boarding schools in the northern region. Vice-chancellor of UniMAP, Brig. Gen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin said that the sharing of expertise is particularly aimed to foster students' interest in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

"This initiative is also aimed to increase students’ motivation in learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, to achieve the target for ‘Dasar Sains Teknikal dan Sastera’ at the ratio of 60:40.

"It is in line with the recommendations of the Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh who wants to increase the number of science students, as STEM education is important to foster country’s economic development”, he said during the 30th Mara Junior Science College (MRSM), Berseri Graduation Ceremony recently.

He added that among the schools that will benefit from the solar technology are: MRSM Kubang Pasu, MRSM Beseri and SMS Tuanku Syed Putra (SMSTSP).
"This partnership is under the collaboration with the School of Engineering (PPK) Electrical System and as a start, we chose three schools for the project and soon it will be expanded to other schools too”.

According to Datuk Dr. Kamarudin, the three projects that have been proposed are: Green Gazebo for MRSM Kubang Pasu, Water Fountain for MRSM Beseri and Green Technology Park for SMSTSP. All three projects will be utilizing solar energy to power up lights, fans, water pumps and other electronic equipment including USB device.

"UniMAP will supply and install all the equipment needed, including of solar panels, batteries, water pumps and solar lighting which will be at a cost of approximately RM5,000," said Dr Kamarudin.
