Malaysian Researchers Seize 12 Gold Medals in Croatia

Kangar, 8 November – The Malaysian researcher delegates who participated in the International Invention Show (INOVA) that took place in Croatia uplifted the name of Malaysia by winning 12 gold, six silver and one special category medals.

During the five-day competition, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) researchers led by the Manager of the Centre of Excellence Geopolymer and Green Technology (CEGeoGTech) Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd. Mustafa Al-Bakri Abdullah topped the list of medal winners with seven gold and three silver medals.

Also contributing to the medal wins were the young researchers from Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah, Selangor with two gold and one silver, Sekolah Menengah Sains (SMS) Muar (one gold and one silver), SMS Tengku Abdullah (one gold and one silver) and SMS Tapah who obtained one gold medal.

UniMAP's gold medal was acquired through School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship (PPIPT) lecturer Dr. Hirwan Jasbir Jaafar with his research findings jointly carried out with UniMAP Vice Chancellor Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin, namely the two school education modules Module EYE and Module M2S.

Both modules which were developed to help secondary schoolchildren by upholding science and mathematics were a joint research that was carried out with the Perlis Excellent Teachers Council.

According to Dr. Kamarudin the M2S (Mathematics and Science Excellence) module was designed to help students learn and master science and mathematics and to enhance their interest in both subjects.

Even prouder, he said, is that the module managed to gain the attention and interest of the jurists in applying it to boost the enthusiasm of Croatian students in mastering the two subjects.

“This module which combines teaching inside and outside classrooms was specially formulated to help students to be proficient in both subjects as well as helping them to obtain excellent results in examinations.

“Via this module, students are provided guidance in study techniques, mastering  question requirements and answering the questions, provided through at least 14 meetings with the teacher,” he explained in a statement here today.

INOVA is an annual event organised by the Croatian Inventors Association (CIA) with the cooperation of the Croatian Chamber of Economy, Office of the President of Croatia and participation from 15 countries such as Russia, Romania, Korea, Moldova, Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Poland.

Besides Dr. Hirwan Jasbir, also attracting the attention of the jurists were the inventions of Prof. Madya Dr. Che Mohd Ruzaidi Ghazali, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Oil Palm Trunk Plywood and Natural Additives From Leucaena Leucocephala which won the INOVA Best Agriculture Invention Award.

Dr. Mohd. Firdaus Omar, senior lecturer of the School of Material Engineering also contributed to a gold medal win through his High Performance of Hybrid Natural Fibre Reinforced Composite research findings.
