Korea's Success In TVET Attracts UniMAP

SEOUL, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Korea's success in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) will be used as a model by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) to enhance the programme at its university.

UniMAP vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Kamarudin Hussin said Korea was the first country to implement TVET, while Malaysia only did so a few years ago.

The effectiveness of their concept or module, could be applied to strengthen implementation of TVET in Malaysia, he told reporters after the signing of a Letter of Intention (LoI) with World Skills Korea on TVET cooperation.

The signing ceremony was held at the Global Institute For Transferring Skills (GIFTS) here yesterday and was witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is UniMAP chancellor.

World Skills Korea was represented by its secretary-general, Dr Eom Joon Chul.

Kamarudin said the cooperation with South Korea was an effort by UniMAP to produce graduates who met the needs of the industry.

Meanwhile, Dr Chul said TVET was implemented in Korea since 1981 to provide basic skills for school leavers as less than 25 per cent of its young people pursued university studies.
"The programme is successful and received encouraging response from students and companies," he added.
He said Korea was willing to share its experience and expertise to help Malaysia enhance the TVET programme through GIFTS, which was opened in 2013.
