UniMAP Targets 10 Gold Medals at SUKIPT 2016

KANGAR, 20 January – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) aims to take home 10 gold medals at the Kejohanan Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (SUKIPT) 2016 which will take place from 25 January to 5 February 2016 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai, Johor.

UniMAP Vice Chancellor Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin said that the target was set in an effort to maintain their achievement of being in the top 10 placement during SUKIPT 2014.

“In 2014 we achieved fourth place and this time I hope UniMAP will be able to maintain or improve our position in this championship.

“I believe we are able to score the 10 gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals if our athletes perform their best,” he said in a speech during the UniMAP Contingent to SUKIPT 2016 Flag Handover Ceremony at the UniMAP Kubang Gajah Campus here yesterday.

Also present were UniMAP Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic And International Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal, UniMAP Deputy Vice Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Fo’ad Sakdan and Director of the UniMAP Sports Centre also the contingent leader of SUKIPT UniMAP 2016 Suhizaz Sudin.

He mentioned that among the events targeted to win gold are Karate-Do, Athletics, Beach Volleyball and Petanque.

“We will participate in 10 out of 25 events and UniMAP will send a contingent of 132 athletes including officials who will take up the challenge of SUKIPT 2016.

“I am certain that all athletes have prepared to the best of their abilities and are ready to uphold the university name in the tournament,” he said.

Among the events that UniMAP will participate in are Handball (M), Lawn Bowling, Karate-Do, Silat, Taekwando, Tennis, Petanque, Athletics, Archery and Beach Volleyball.

For the record, UniMAP collected a total of 15 gold, six silver and eight bronze medals at SUKIPT 2014 which was held at Universiti Teknologi MARA where it won the fourth overall placing.
