UniMAP To Have First Green Technology Surau

PADANG BESAR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The Uniciti Alam campus of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) will have its first green technology surau as a new landmark.

It is the result of a smart partnership between the university and Proven Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Special adviser to the Higher Education Minister Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin said the project which cost RM1 million would use a solar panel roof.

"The surau will be constructed based on the Industrial Building System through gotong-royong between students and staff and is expected to be completed before the fasting month."

He was speaking to reporters after performing the ground-breaking for the construction of the surau, known as 'As-Saodah', at the campus in Sungai Chuchuh, here, today.

Also present were UniMAP deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Fo'ad Sakdan and Perlis deputy mufti, Roslan Esa.

Kamarudin, who is UniMAP former vice-chancellor, said the construction of the surau would complete the campus infrastructure for the convenience of 3,840 students and 300 staff of the Engineering Technology Faculty, besides local residents.

"The surau which is built on 4,000 square feet of land to accommodate about 500 people at any one time, is fully sponsored by Proven Holdings Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datuk Dr Yusof Jusoh, who is also UniMAP adjunct professor," he added.

Meanwhile, Yusof said the company planned to build 350 units of apartment for students, lecturers and staff at the Uniciti Alam campus.

"We have identified a five-acre land next to the campus site for this project," he said.
