UniMAP Bioelectromagnetic Research Team Verifies Electromagnetic Fields Do Not Affect Human Health

Pauh Putra, 3 March – The bioelectromagnetic research team from the School of Computer and Communication Engineering and the School of Electrical System Engineering held a seminar for the assessment of a joint project between Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

The seminar entitled Overview of The Impact of Electromagnetic Fields on Human Health – An Update About The Effects of Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Fields (ELF-MFs) On Nervous System was held at the Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra (PTSFP) Library Auditorium here today.

International expert Dr Claudia Consales a senior scientist from the Italian National Agency was invited to present a talk regarding two joint projects between UniMAP and SKMM namely The Effects of Short Term LTE (850, 1800,2600 MHz) Base Station Signal Exposure On Cognitive Performance, Well Being, Physiological Parameters and Electroencephalography (EEG) of The Malaysian Children and A Study On The Biological Effects of LTE (850,1800,3600 MHz) EMF Exposures.

Acting Vice Chancellor Dato’ Prof Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said that the research was performed to allay the community's fears on the effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation that was thought to have adverse consequences on health.

“The research proves that electromagnetic waves are not able to pose any health risks to the nearby people, including the elderly and the young,” he assured.

He also expressed pride on the success of the UniMAP research team for causing a large socio-economic impact in the research field.

He said the cooperation with the government proves that the university is an important resource hub to acquire innovative ideas, latest knowledge and experts who are capable of attracting foreign investors.

“Therefore, UniMAP will endeavour along with the government's trust using contracts and research grants to elevate the reputation of the country whether at a national or international level,” he said.

Also present at the seminar were SKMM Senior Director and Head of the Technology And Society Division Tuan Aisharuddin Nuruddin and UniMAP Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering Prof Dr R. Badlishah Ahmad.

The year-long study which had been carried out by a group of UniMAP researchers led by Dr Mohd Fareq Abdul Malek discovered no connection between long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation and the health and well-being of humans.
