UniMAP and UniKL MoU Strengthens TVET Agenda

Kangar, 7 March – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and Universiti Teknikal Mara Sdn Bhd (UniKL) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 26 February.

The ceremony was held at the UniKL Chancellery in Kuala Lumpur which was realised by the early talks that took place since early last year through joint supervision and research demonstrating the commitment between UniMAP and UniKL while at the same time strengthening the cooperation between the public and private universities.

The MoU was signed by UniMAP Acting Vice Chancellor Dato’ Prof Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal and the President of UniKL Dato’ Prof Dr Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, and was witnessed by the Dean of UniMAP School of Materials Engineering Dr. Khairel Rafezi Ahmad, Professor at the UniMAP School of Materials Engineering Prof. Dr. Mohd Noor Ahmad, UniKL Deputy President Academic and Technology Prof. Dato' Dr. Azanam Shah Hashim, Dean of the UniKL British Malaysia Institute (BMI) Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Izhar Abu Bakar and Senior Lecturer of UniKL BMI Dr. Mohd Azraie Mohd Azmi.

Dato’ Zul Azhar said the memorandum of understanding was accomplished to strengthen the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agenda based on the experiences and expertise of both UniMAP and UniKL.

“Cooperation in research was also implemented through a study in graphene oxide-based nanobiosensor to detect early stages of cancer.

“Besides that, there will also be joint applications for grants to the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) Malaysia such as the Long-term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS), the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), the Transdisciplinary Research Grant Scheme (TRGS) and the Collaborative Research in Engineering Science and Technology (CREST) which would involve cooperation between university and corporation,” he stated.

Earlier, the UniMAP Centre of Excellence for Advanced Sensor Technology (CEASTech) and the UniKL Spanish Malaysian Institute in Kulim, Kedah carried out a collaborative research and development of nano materials for the fabrication of sensors such as graphen and thin-film materials.

This collaboration was also accomplished to acquire grants with the cooperation of foreign institutes such as the Newton-Ungku Omar and the British Council grants. Through this research, both parties will be incorporating a start-up company.
