DATO’ PROFESOR DR. ZUL AZHAR ZAHID JAMAL NEW UniMAP VICE CHANCELLOR
KANGAR, 11 May: The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) has announced the appointment of Dato’ Professor Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal as the Universiti Malaysia Perlis’ (UniMAP) Vice Chancellor to replace Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin whose contract expired on 10 February 2016.
Professor Dr. Zul Azhar has been appointed for a period of three years effective 1 May 2016 to 30 April 2019.
Professor Dr. Zul Azhar who was born in Taiping, Perak received his secondary education at the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). He obtained his Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Physics from Western Michigan University in 1985 and 1987 respectively.
He then served at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) before pursuing his doctorate (PhD) at the University of Liverpool in Materials Engineering, specialising in Fabrication and Characterisation of Electronic Materials.
Then, he continued his services at USM until UniMAP (then KUKUM) was established in 2002.
At UniMAP, Dato’ Prof. Dr Zul Azhar was appointed the Dean of the School of Microelectronic Engineering until 2006. Subsequently he was entrusted with the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) for a period of 3 years.
In 2011, he was appointed the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International). When the term of appointment of the former UniMAP Vice Chancellor came to a close in February 2016, Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar was mandated to carry out the duties of the Vice Chancellor, pending the appointment of a new one.

The Ministry of Higher Education would like to take this opportunity to express the highest appreciation and gratitude to YBhg. Brig. Jen. Datuk Professor Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin for his service and contribution during his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of UniMAP for 14 years, from 16 February 2002 to 10 February 2016.
It is the hope of the KPT that the excellence culture will continued to be nurtured by the new Vice Chancellor of UniMAP.
Meanwhile, Zul Azhar said the appointment is a major and important bestowal of trust and he hopes that the entire UniMAP community will lend support to further develop the university together.
