Biography in Brief
Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal

Y. Bhg. Dato' Professor Ts Dr. Zul Azhar who was born in Taiping, Perak received his secondary education at the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). He obtained his Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Physics from Western Michigan University in 1985 and 1987 respectively.

He then served at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) before pursuing his doctorate (PhD) at the University of Liverpool in Materials Engineering, specialising in Fabrication and Characterisation of Electronic Materials. Then, he continued his services at USM until UniMAP (then KUKUM) was established in 2002.

At UniMAP, Dato’ Prof. Dr Zul Azhar was appointed the Dean of the School of Microelectronic Engineering until 2006. Subsequently he was entrusted with the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) for a period of 3 years.

In 2011, he was appointed the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International). When the term of appointment of the former UniMAP Vice Chancellor came to a close in February 2016, Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar was mandated to carry out the duties of the Vice Chancellor, pending the appointment of a new one.

YBhg. Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zul Azhar's experience in institutional management and administration makes him the perfect candidate to lead UniMAP to greater heights.

Brief Biography

Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin Hussin dilahirkan pada tanggal 10 Februari 1955 di Pudu, Kuala Lumpur . Anak kelima pasangan Hussin Salleh dan Hasmah Hj. Abu Bakar ini mendapat pendidikan awal di Sekolah Rendah Pasar Road dan Sekolah Rendah Kampung Pandan. Beliau meneruskan persekolahannya di Sekolah Menengah Aminuddin Baki dan seterusnya menamatkan pengajian di tingkatan enam di Sekolah Menengah Alam Shah.

Selepas zaman persekolahan, beliau melanjutkan pelajaran di Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) dan mendapat Ijazah Sarjana Muda (kepujian) dalam bidang Kimia pada 1979, dan dalam tahun 1982 beliau memperoleh Ijazah Sarjana dalam bidang Elektrokimia di universiti yang sama.

Dalam tahun 1993 beliau melengkapkan pengajian peringkat Doktor Falsafah (Ph.D) dalam program kerjasama antara USM dengan Kalgoorlie School of Mines, Australia dalam bidang Kejuruteraan Bahan (Metalurgi Pengekstrakan). Kejayaan beliau memperoleh ijazah sarjana muda hingga doktor falsafah di USM menempatkan beliau sebagai antara sebilangan kecil mahasiswa atau siswazah yang pertama yang berupaya menamatkan pengajian dalam bidang sains dan kejuruteraan sepenuhnya di universiti yang sama di dalam negara.

Sejarah perkongsian ilmunya dalam dunia penyelidikan bermula apabila beliau memulakan kerjayanya di USM sebagai Pensyarah Pusat Pengajian Kimia. Dalam tempoh bermula dari 1982 dan berakhir pada 1985, beliau dilantik sebagai Pengerusi Rancangan Kimia di Pusat Matrikulasi, USM. Apabila Pusat Pengajian Kejuruteraan Bahan dan Sumber Mineral ditubuhkan di USM dalam tahun 1986 beliau memilih untuk membangunkan pusat pengajian baru itu dan USM (Kampus Cawangan Perak), yang memberikan tumpuan pada program-program pengajian kejuruteraan, bersama-sama beberapa orang rakan pensyarah yang lain. Mulai tahun 1989-1991 beliau dilantik sebagai Timbalan Dekan Pusat Pengajian Kejuruteraan Bahan dan Sumber Mineral sebelum menyambungkan pengajian peringkat Ph.D-nya, dan dilantik semula pada tahun 1993-1996 bagi jawatan yang sama sebaik sahaja menamatkan pengajian. Pada tahun 1996 hingga Mei 2001 beliau dilantik pula sebagai Dekan di pusat pengajian tersebut.

Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin pernah juga dilantik sebagai Penolong Penggawa (yang bertanggungjawab mengurus asrama dan mentadbir aktiviti mahasiswa peringkat asrama) pada tahun 1984-1986 dan sebagai Penggawa di USM (Cawangan Perak) dari tahun 1986-1991. Kemuncak kerjaya beliau di USM terserlah setelah dilantik sebagai Pengarah, Kampus Kejuruteraan USM di Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang pada Mei 2001 sehingga Mac 2002 sebelum dilantik sebagai Rektor Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia pada 16 Februari 2002. Menurut Dato' Dr. Kamarudin, pada waktu transisi (ketika masih menjadi staf USM dan dalam masa yang sama telah dilantik sebagai Rektor) inilah beliau dapat dikatakan setiap hari berulang-alik dari Nibong Tebal ke Kangar (sekitar 3 bulan) untuk seperti biasa mengurus Kampus Kejuruteraan USM, dalam masa yang sama menggerakkan dan membangunkan kampus baru UniMAP.

Membangunkan kampus baru bukan kerja baru bagi beliau, Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin merupakan seorang daripada tenaga penggerak yang terlibat dalam pembangunan kampus sementara USM di Ipoh mulai tahun 1986 hingga 1989, dan kampus tetap USM (Cawangan Perak) yang berpindah ke Tronoh dalam tahun 1990. Selanjutnya, beliau bertanggungjawab membangunkan kampus tetap USM (Cawangan Kejuruteraan) di Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang mulai 1997 hingga 2001.

Atas ikatan kasih sayang, Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin telah mendirikan rumahtangga dengan Noridah Yangman pada 4 Jun 1978 dan hasil perkongsiaan hidup yang damai dan bahagia, pasangan ini dikurnia Allah empat orang cahaya mata, dua orang putera dan dua orang puteri. Menurut Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin, Datin Noridah ialah insan di sebalik kejayaaannya dan merupakan insan yang paling banyak memberikan dorongan serta sokongan dalam kerjaya dan kehidupan beliau. Kini berkat disiplin dan asuhan yang disemai oleh kedua-dua pasangan ini, keempat-empat putera dan puteri mereka telah berjaya melanjutkan pelajaran ke luar Negara dalam pelbagai bidang pengajian.

Di samping mencipta kejayaan gemilang dalam kerjayanya, kebolehan dan sumbangan beliau juga begitu terserlah dalam kerja-kerja sukarela dan kemasyarakatan. Bakti dan jasa beliau tidak terkira dengan jari. Naib Canselor pertama UniMAP ini ialah Mantan Pengerusi Biro Pencegahan di IPT & Kelab PEMADAM Kebangsaan bagi tahun 2003 dan 2005, dan kini Naib Yang Di Pertua PEMADAM Kebangsaan. Kerana ketokohan dan minatnya melakukan kerja-kerja sukarela yang mendalam, Datuk Prof. Dr. Kamarudin dilantik sebagai Naib Pengerusi PBSMM Perlis pada tahun 2005. Selain itu, beliau telah lama aktif sebagai tenaga penggerak dan Penceramah Biro Tatanegara (BTN) sejak tahun 1995. Dalam Pasukan Sukarela Askar Wataniah pula, nama Dato' Prof. Dr. Kamarudin bagai tidak dapat dipisahkan daripada pasukan itu. Namun, oleh sebab kewibawaan, keprihatinan, disiplin dan sekali lagi minatnya yang amat mendalam, beliau pernah dilantik sebagai Pegawai Memerintah Batalion 1 berpangkat Leftenan Kolonel di Rejimen 504 pada tahun 1 Januari 2003 hingga 2006 sebelum ditukarkan ke Rejimen 509 di Pulau Pinang sebagai Komandan yang berpangkat Kolonel pada 30 November 2006.

Bagi mengenang dan mengiktiraf sumbangan bakti beliau samada dalam bidang kerjaya dan aktiviti sukarela, beliau telah dianugerahkan pingat Ahli Mahkota Perak (AMP) oleh DYMM Sultan Perak pada tahun 1998 dan dianugerahkan Darjah Paduka Sirajuddin Jamalullail (DPSJ) yang membawa gelaran Dato' oleh DYMM Raja Perlis pada 17 Mei 2004.
